Part 2 of PURBEAUTY: My Top Picks
Posted by krisbacani in Makeup Reviews, Uncategorized on October 24, 2011
I have gotten to know PURBEAUTY inside and out ever since I started teaching in Makeup Designory Manila. Here are my current faves from this store:
1. ORLY NAIL POLISH, P349.75
Before I became I makeup artist, I specifically remember the 2 times I had a professional manicure and pedicure: my junior prom and my sister’s debut. Putting on nail polish never really appealed to me; I see it as a time consuming, unnecessary task. Now, I can’t live without it! As a makeup artist and makeup teacher, my hands are always captured in photos (especially wedding photos) and people always look at them whenever I do makeup demos. So every two weeks, I go to my suking nail spa for mani-pedi to make sure that my fingernails are always clean, polished, and coated in a pretty shade (I couldn’t do my own mani-pedi even if my life depended on it). The spa charges more if you want to use premium nail polish, so I just bought my favorite Orly shades since I know I’ll be using them over and over again. My staple shades are:
Country Club Khaki. A “greige” shade (gray + beige), or as my friend put it, my bangkay-gray shade. :p
Cupcake
Gumdrop
Orly has launched their new Birds of a Feather line, and the Purbeauty people told me it’s going to be available in a month’s time in the store.

I am not a fan of metallic shades, but this one really appealed to me:
Pretty, no? Purbeauty people, are you reading this? SPRINT ASIA PEOPLE, ARE YOU READING THIS??? This would make a very nice Christmas gift! Hehe
2. BEN NYE LOOSE POWDER, P300-400
I’m so happy more and more professional makeup are now available here in Manila through Purbeauty. One that I was looking forward to for a very long time is Ben Nye Cosmetics, an affordable yet densely pigmented line of makeup. Last week, I finally saw them displayed. I will be buying this after I’m finished with my Kryolan loose powders:
Ben Nye Loose Powder in Banana. The powder is very very fine, and at P300, it’s really affordable.
3. MAKEUP DESIGNORY CHEEK COLOR IN GLOW, P925
A dead ringer of Nars’ orgasm, but with less shimmer so it’s perfect for everyday. Very pigmented, too.
3. BDELLIUM TOOLS 10 PIECE BRUSH SET WITH BRUSH ROLL, around P5,000
I was able to use these brushes last week when I taught the personal makeup class, and the quality is good. At around P5,000, the price is not bad at all. It has the basics covered. Plus I like the brush roll, which is very utilitarian chic. Some of my students bought this and they’re very happy with it! I recommend this a starter brush set for newbie makeup artists, and as a personal set for makeup addicts/junkies.
4. GRAFTOBIAN LIP COLOR PALETTE, P1,500
Here’s another professional brand that is worth checking out. Most makeup artists I know carry Graftobian in their kit, and they’re satisfied with its performance.
If only I don’t have yet the shades in this palette, I would have instantly bought this. The color selection is perfect for bridal work. Other palettes are also available with different color selection.
5. GRAFTOBIAN HD PRO POWDER PALETTE, P5,000
I’m buying the refills for this palette. My Makeup Designory co-teacher Georginna Desuasido convinced me to buy these, and I will definitely! I like the full coverage it gives.
7. DOLLFACE EYESHADOW PALETTE, around P850
Who hasn’t heard of Dollface? With a whopping 88 colors in a palette and with an unbeatable price to boot, this is the go-to brand for makeup artists and junkies who don’t want to shell out on pricey eyeshadows yet. The color combinations are endless!
What are your favorite products from Purbeauty? I’d love to hear from you!

PURBEAUTY: Haven for Makeup Artists and Makeup Addicts

I can’t believe I haven’t blogged about PurBeauty, given that this store is the home of Makeup Designory Manila, the makeup school where I currently teach. It has been open for almost a year now and earlier this year I’m there almost everyday, so this post is long overdue!
Aside from it being MUD Manila’s headquarters, it is a haven for MUAs (Make Up Artists and yes, Make Up Addicts also) and the go-to place for all things kikay. The following makeup equipment are available here:
Love that zebra print trolley!
Makeup chairs and malettes galore
ZUCA trolley, around P14,000. I’ve been eyeing this for months already!
You can also find the following brands here:
CHARM & BDELLIUM MAKEUP BRUSHES
Speaking of Makeup Designory, I dropped in the ongoing Diploma Class by co-teacher Georginna Desuasido.
I missed you, Ginna! The students learned all about eyeliner, mascara, false eyelash, and lipstick application earlier. I’ll be teaching the Diploma night classes on January 2012, so for those interested to enroll, you may call Purbeauty at 8469016 and look for Alexis.
I’ll be posting my top picks from this store next, but for now I’ll leave you with my haul for today. I have Purbeauty gift certificates and I decided to spend them on new Revlon lip colors for my kit.
L-R: Revlon Colorstay Lipsticks (P575 each) in Crimson, Mauve, Plum, and Soft Rose
L-R: Revlon Colorburst Lipglosses(P575 each) in Gold Dust, Rosepearl, Papaya and Bordeaux
Gorgeous, aren’t they?

I collaborated with Edric again for another shoot, and this time I was able to stay to change looks. I’m so happy with the beauty shots he took, you could really see the detail of the makeup. I’ll take this opportunity to tell you how I did the makeup and what products I used to achieve those looks (since you could now buy it from me! =))

How I did the eye makeup in above photo using Makeup Designory products:
1. I used Black eyeliner as eyebrow pencil to fill in the brows. I wanted to make them bold so I exaggerated the shape a bit.
2. For eyeshadow, I used Sunset and mixed it with a bit of Sunflower for the base, and contoured the eyes slightly with Firebrick. Now I have this golden-orangey color =)
3. I lined the eyes with Black Cake Eyeliner, and extended the wing way up almost to her eyebrows.
4. Last but not the least, I added false eyelashes to enhance the eyes more.
For the second layout, I wanted to retain the bold eyebrows and the winged eyeliner, so instead of removing makeup (with the exception of the orange eyeshadow), I just added more makeup to change the look. Here’s how I tweaked it:
1. Using an angled liner brush, I dipped it in the eyeshadow color Ice and made a thin line under the eyes and winged it up also.
2. I made a really thin black line underneath the white line using the Black Cake Eyeliner again. What I like about the Cake Eyeliner is that you could really control the thickness or thinness of the lines (with the help of a liner brush), as you could very well see in the photo above.
3. For the lips, I used lipstick in Ladybug shade. Your lips couldn’t get any redder than this!
That last photo is my fave =)

MAKEUP DESIGNORY COSMETICS is Finally Here!

As a makeup artist, clients always ask me, “What’s the makeup brand that you use most often?” or “What’s a good makeup brand that you could recommend to me?” My co-makeup artists, upon seeing my eyeshadow/blush/foundation palettes, always ask me “What brand is this?” or “Where can I buy this?” I always have a hard time answering these questions because the brand that I most often use was not available here in the Philippines before, so I always end up just recommending the other brands that are available here.
But finally, it’s here! And more importantly, you could buy it from me! I wanted to sell a brand that I truly use and believe in, and I’m happy to announce that I’m now selling Makeup Designory (MUD) Cosmetics, the brand of my makeup school in New York.
——————————–
: AN EDUCATED APPROACH TO MAKEUP
At Make-Up Designory (MUD), creating honest make-up products and providing quality education has been our passion for the past decade. We plan to stay loyal to that tradition. That’s what makes us different from other make-up brands. We conduct rigorous testing for our MUD line of products through industry experts and up-and-coming make-up artists at our highly regarded schools in Los Angeles and New York, to ensure we meet professional standards for today and tomorrow.
So whether you dare to be different, prefer polished and professional or simply want an all-natural look, MUD promises quality, long-lasting wearability, flawless application and radiantly accurate color. With our systematic lines, precision tools, how-to guides and insider tips, we’ve eliminated the frustrating guesswork. Just simple, smart, versatile make-up. No wonder MUD has been the expert choice of make-up professionals for the past decade.
——————————–
Whether you’re a pro or just a makeup enthusiast, I guarantee that you’ll l find something that you love in MUD makeup. Here are some of my faves:
1. EYE COLOR in DULCE DE LECHE, CASHMERE, and TAUPE
These 3 shades are what I always use to create the natural look. Aside from these three, there are 38 long-lasting colors to choose from, ranging from matte, satin, to shimmery finishes. What’s more, the eye colors are very pigmented, so a little goes a loooong way. I gave my mom some shades two years ago, and she’s so amazed that until now she’s not finished with it, given that she uses it almost every day! What I like about it too is that since they use superior ingredients, the color that you see in the compact is definitely the color that you’ll get when you apply it on your face.
2. CHEEK COLOR in GLOW
This shade makes your cheeks, well, glow. This peachy pink shade is a deadringer of Nars’ Orgasm blush, but with less shimmer so it’s perfect for everyday use (and more affordable too!) Just like the eye colors, the cheek colors are also very pigmented and long-lasting. Check out more shades here.
3. CONCEALER/CORRECTOR in BC2
My secret product for removing dark undereyes. We always read in the magazines that we have to use yellow based concealers for dark undereyes, but really the best shade is a salmon colored concealer to counter the blueness/grayness of the undereyes. My clients always wonder how I’m able to conceal their eyebags, and this is the product for it. There are also shades of concealers that counter redness, you could check out the full range here.
Just how good is this product? It was awarded in Mega Magazine’s July 2010 issue as one of the best eyeliners in the market now. This is water-activated, so definitely it wouldn’t dry out like other cake liners. Since you would be using an eyeliner brush with this, you could create very, very precise lines with it, whether it’s a thin or bold one. Again, and I can’t stress this enough, it’s also long-lasting. I’ve had mine for almost two years, and I’m not even halfway through the product.
5. PALETTES
These are my lifesavers. Makeup artists lug around lots of colors, so putting them in palettes is a good way of organizing them while at the same time also saving space in the makeup kit. It’s also a great way of saving money, because instead of buying several colors that come in compacts, you could just buy the refills (which are less expensive) and insert them in the palettes.
What I like about the MUD palettes is that refills fit in snugly in the holes. There are no extra spaces once you fill it in, so the eyeshadows and blushes are less likely to break if ever you drop the whole palette. It’s also magnetic so even if you turn it upside down it wouldn’t fall off. I’ve dropped my palettes countless of times, and the eyeshadows and blushes didn’t break! I’m betting my life that yours wouldn’t too if ever you buy these babies.
Lastly, the eyeshadow palette could also fit MAC eyeshadows, and the blush palette could also fit Makeup Forever eyeshadows, so that’s definitely a plus.
——————————–
All I can say is that if you want honest, high-quality, no-frills makeup that does the job, then do explore Makeup Designory Cosmetics. It doesn’t matter if you’re a pro makeup artist or just starting out with makeup, I guarantee you that you’ll love it. I use it personally for everyday and for weddings, magazine photoshoots, fashion shows, print and tv commercial shoots, and it’s never failed me.
